北部某醫學中心「清潔雙手,守護生命」活動之經驗分享

Life Event:Clean Hands & Save Lives @ Medical Center in North Taiwan

Regularly keeping your hands clean is considered as a good habit; it is economical and practical in preventing any healthcare-associated infections. Hospitals accommodate the prevention pattern as a policy and efficient methodology of infection control.

In 2005, the World Health Organization adopted “Clean Care is Safer Care,” was the first global patient safety challenge theme. In 2009, "Save Lives: Clean Your Hands" was launched to promote hand hygiene as a habit. In order to improve the wellness of patients, and advertise safety culture, hygiene campaigns were launched. These advocated for reducing the incidence of healthcare-associated infections and implemented hospital infection control.

The hospital is a medical center with a total of 743 beds and 2,293 employees, including 76.31% of medical care workers. Since 2008, the hand hygiene campaign has been implemented, and has linked nurses to other units. As a result, monthly audited results of infection control center were used to calculate the hand hygiene compliance of the entire hospital. As a result of the compliance, bloodstream infections have decreased from 1.42 to 1.07 ‰.

On May 5th, the World Health Organization (WHO) hand hygiene day strengthen impression of the importance in mass hand hygiene. With the five fingers symbolizing hand hygiene, and through hand hygiene activities, the slogan of "clean hands and protect lives", carry on the hand hygiene culture in the hospital.

The hospital ambassador, a spokesperson and hand hygienist, conducts as a guardianship bond to promote "Clean hands, Save Lives (protective life)." As the focus is patient safety first, and the scope of conduct; it includes the entire hospital's ward and clinic. To celebrate the event, a cute version hospital ambassador’s sticker will be printed to bring awareness to the campaign, May 1st until the 11th. The entire hospital staff act as the model of "clean hands, protect life,” and will implement it in the clinic.

With all the support from the dean of the hospital, one will continue to preserve the culture of hand hygiene in medical institutions, improve hand hygiene and keep in compliance with medical standards in order to protect lives.
